Favourite 8 - Lockheed L-188 Electra
The Lockheed L-188 Electra represented a major step in technology over the piston-powered airliners in use during the 1950's. Thanks to the use of turboprops the Electra was about 100 mph faster than its predecessors and it was much more efficient. It offered space to up to around 100 passengers.
In spite of a promising start, some major accidents harmed the prospects of the Electra. After the technical problems were overcome, the L-188 provedto be a very reliable airliner. I enjoyed to see and photograph the aircraft at airports and for me it became one of my big favourites. The opening picture shows a cargo aircraft of Zantop International Airlines at Detroit Willow Run Airport.
